Hearing Aids

How hearing aids are chosen?

The patient should get his ears examined by ear specialist and an audiogram should be obtained to know the degree and type of hearing loss. If hearing loss is not treatable by medicine/surgery then a hearing aid is prescribed. A hearing aid which matches with the audiogram can be purchased after a thorough trial.  For better fitting an impression of patient’s ear is taken and ear-mould prepared. Hearing aid should be customized according to individual needs.

Different types of Hearing Aids:

Hearing aid is an electronic device which amplifies sound. Besides the old pockets type of hearing aids,  behind the ear (BTE), in the ear (ITE),in the canal (ITC) and completely in the canal (CIC) hearing aids are also available. Very small hearing aids are now available which fit into the ear canal and are hardly visible.

Digital and Programmable computerized aids are the most technologically advanced and are available in CIC, ITC, ITE and BTE models. Digital technology enables excellent speech clarity and intelligibility in noise. You hear your environment again just as you would like to and you can enjoy music too. There are individually adjustable hearing programs to provide this facility, No internal noise spoils the hearing experience and interference from cordless and mobile telephones is now drastically reduced. With precise fitting and smooth functioning, it is the ideal hearing instrument class for all age groups.

BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing aids): In cases with conductive or mixed deafness like bilateral canel atresia and middle ear problems or severe one sided deafness which an not be corrected by regular hearing aids.

It consists of a digital sound processor and works directly via stimulating inner ear via bone conduction.

BAHA is implanted over scalp by simple surgery (FDA approved in child above 5 years of age); in children below 5 years BAHA soft band can be used.

Cochlear implant:

People having profound deafness and can not be benefitted from conventional hearing aids may benefit from a cochlear implant. In this type of implantable hearing aid a wire electrode is surgically inserted into the inner ear (the cochlea). Intense speech and hearing therapy is required often for several years following this operation. Cochlear implants can be used for children and adults.
